WA: State woes bring Labor slump in WA: poll

A survey suggests that voters in Western Australia are flocking back to the Liberal
Party, with support for the Labor Party in the doldrums.

The Australian reports that the latest Newspoll found it hasn't been a great first
year for Western Australia's Labor government, and voters are unhappy about it.

It says Labor WA had serious long-term problems.

The Newspoll had Labor steady on 35 per cent, six percentage points behind the Liberals.

With the exclusive poll taken in October-December, this put the Liberals almost 10
points higher than the February 10 election primary vote of 31.2 per cent.

The poll came at the end of a mediocre first year for GEOFF GALLOP'S Labor government,
in which controversial social reforms included changes to electoral laws, the introduction
of gay rights legislation and legal recognition of de facto couples.
