Vic: Police investigate DPP security after theft of laptops

MELBOURNE, April 25 AAP - Laptop computers containing prosecution files have been stolenfrom Victoria's Office of Public Prosecutions and police are investigating whether a securitysystem was left off.

A police spokesman today confirmed 15 laptop computers containing files relating toserious crimes were stolen from the third-floor Lonsdale Street offices during the Easterholiday break.

He said a detective from the Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit was investigating thetheft, but police believed it was only a crime of opportunity.

"There's nothing to indicate that the people targeted the building because of the tenants,"

he said.

The Age reported today that the door security system to the building was not changedfrom its normal Monday to Friday settings over the Easter break.

As a result the doors to the building opened as normal over the Easter public holidays.

The newspaper also reported that the security system in the offices was off.

The police spokesman said the security status of the building over the break wouldform part of the police investigation.

The computers are valued at between $45,000 and $60,000.
